To pin or not to pin
Date
May 2023
Materials
Sponge, polymer clay, paint, steel pins
Type
Convertible ring, pendant or earring
This piece is inspired by a practical wristband designed for sewing pins. In my rendition, it was imperative to preserve both the original's flexibility and the functionality of pinning. As a result, the piece serves a versatile purpose, adaptable as a ring, pendant, or earring. Two custom pins were crafted, one for the pendant and one for the earring, allowing for diverse styling options and personalization.
Regarding form, my focal point rested on the contour of the original wristband's lower section, emphasizing the illusion of the band melting and cascading downward, a feature accentuated in my design.
The composition is executed in semitransparent polymer clay, chosen for its capacity to retain partial flexibility post-baking. For the cushion element, I utilized blue-dyed foam, enhancing its rigidity to ensure secure pin placement. Both the two custom pins and the earring feature original sewing pins embedded within the design.
