With time all goes back to dust

For this project, I was asked to create a ring that incorporated the material 'dust.' Contemplating the significance of this material led me to reflect on the adage 'with time, all goes back to dust.' This served as the foundational concept for my design, and I opted to craft an hourglass ring filled with dust.

The piece is fashioned from commonplace household materials: the hourglass comprises the ends of two ballpoint pens and four LEGO pieces. To maintain focus on the hourglass, the ring is constructed from transparent plastic, creating the illusion from a distance that the hourglass is suspended on the finger. The plastic ring is cut in the shape of an inverted hourglass, with carefully shaped ends designed to interlock between the two LEGO pieces.

For the dust element, I specifically chose silver dust for its enhanced visibility compared to conventional materials. Incorporating a precious metal in an unexpected and subtle manner within a piece otherwise entirely crafted from household materials added an intriguing dimension to the design.
